3D: fad + artistic milestone

Forget the hype for a moment.

With all due respect, nobody has invented anything fundamentally new in 3D since the 19th century. Digital has simply made 3D easier to acquire, manipulate and distribute in a way that’s more pleasing to large audiences:  the same thing it has done for 2D.

To Merge, 3D is about technique, not technology or hype.  Its about artistic innovation and an expansion of the visual language we speak.  The fact that it can also present important  business opportunities as it evolves in the economic, technological and cultural landscape is a powerful secondary incentive.

In this light, 3D is a logical addition to our toolkit in that it fundamentally changes the relationship of filmmaker to the film and the audience to the picture.  In short, it’s another tool which may well take its place along side sound and color in the filmmaker’s toolkit.
